Solving a Sore Throat Problem
Date: September 27, 2012 Richard Jones

A sore throat problem is often one that is very uncomfortable, depending on the severity of the situation. Pain in the throat area can be something that gradually worsens in a matter of days; the onset of the discomfort can also be sudden, combined with tenderness and sometimes even fever. There are a number of conditions that cause pain in the throat area, and it will be best to seek the expert advice or a dentist or a doctor if the symptoms do not go away with home remedies in a few days.

Sore throat is usually associated with the common cold, or the flu. However, it can also be a symptom of a host of other conditions, including nasal infections, allergies, acid reflux, a reaction to pollutants/smoke/dry air; pain in the throat can also be felt after shouting or talking too loudly for a prolonged period of time.

What can you do to deal with a sore throat problem, in the comfort of your own home?

There are a few things you can do to make the sore throat problem easier to deal with, or to make the condition heal better and in a faster way. It is important to note, though, that when symptoms do not get better after a few days – it is best to seek medical attention to get proper treatment.

  • Gargle with warm water mixed with salt, which will help soothe the throat and relieve the pain/discomfort. The saltwater mixture will also help in decreasing any swelling associated with the sore throat.
  • Keep yourself well hydrated with warm liquids (such as soup or clear broth) and beverages. Drinking plenty of water will ensure that the throat area is kept moist, preventing further irritation and discomfort.
  • Using a humidifier can relieve the dryness that adds to the sore throat problem. If a humidifier is not available, staying in a steamy bathroom for a few minutes can also have the same soothing effect on throat pain.
  • Sucking on lozenges can soothe the pain and discomfort of sore throat – but this should not be given to young children, since a lozenge can be a choking hazard.
  • Getting enough rest will hasten the healing of a sore throat condition, and can help the throat recover more quickly from this ailment.
